It was late at night and quiet. I had been playing a few computer games. Then my eyes began to feel heavy and the screen blurred. My game avatar stood in from of my eyes, waiting for my instructions. But my hand refused to budge from where it was – the keyboard. The avatar seemed to blur out its accessories and facial features unrecognizable. Another online avatar spoke. A white-coloured speech bubble appeared, but the words could not be seen.

I felt myself get sucked into dreamworld. I had become an avatar of the game I had been playing. I was moving about the premises, and M-16 rifle poised, resting in my hands. I picked up a grenade, and threw it into the pitch-black tunnel ahead of me. No explosion. Just silence.

I was jolted awake from my midnight siesta. The room was totally silent, apart from my regular breathing and the relentless humming of the air-conditioning. Dreamworld snapped back to reality – for no reason. I looked at the computer. My game avatar lay sprawled on the ground, dead. No, but that was not what made me wake up.

A thud. A creak. There it was again.

Sounds were coming from outside the window. I opened a window and strained for a better look. An eye-watering stench greeted me, emanating from the dirty rubbish chute that had piled up after five days alone at home. The night was so silent, so dark. Only mere pricks of light could be seen coming from the neighbourhood park.

Then I spotted them.

There were two figures, dressed in black from head to toe. One of them had a tall, burly physique, muscles rippling under his shirt. The other was much smaller. They made their way towards the gate to my bungalow.

Another thud. The metallic gate swung open. I expected the alarm to set off. One second. Two. Still silence. It was final. These two were up to no good. Well, I had the premonition that they were up to no good. Professionals? How did they disable the alarm? What did they want?

I had no time to answer these questions. My parents were on a business trip and I had been left to my own devices, probably for the next two weeks as well. Surely, they would not be home so early.

I heard someone at the door. There was a whisper. Then silence again. A chill ran down my spine. Who was I going to confront at the door? Curiosity and fear were at loggerheads in my mind. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me. I picked up a carbon-made golf club and crept out of the room. I made my way down the hall and reach for my mobile phone. I sent a short text message. I prayed silently that Mr Lim, my neighbour, would receive it. It was already two o’ clock in the morning.

A click resonated through the hall from the main door below. I was tempted to rush down to keep the door locked. Too late. The door swung open. Then there were voices. They were inaudible, blocked out by fear. My ears refused to register them.

Soft thuds of sneakers on the marble floor could be heard.

A weak yellow light-saving bulb along the stairway had been left on. I cursed myself. Why did I not turn it off? A shadow appeared on the wall. The wooden stairs did not creak.

The burly man I saw outside the window was making his way up the stairs. What made it even worse was that he had a gun. A revolver. Carbon fibre, extra grip, enhanced speed and accuracy. I recognized it from training sessions with the air rifle school team. I crept down the hallway stealthily, producing a rope about three centimetres thick. I tied the rope across the breadth of the hallway, leaving it two centimetres from the ground.

I stood poised behind the rope, hidden from sight by an open door. In my hands was the golf club. The footsteps were getting nearer. There was no shadow. The man tripped. Imagine a lump of mass and muscle slamming into the floor. I took up my golf club and swung it with all my might.

The man did not have a chance to even think what was happening. The club hit the man in the temple, knocking the breath out of him. I swiftly tied the man’s hands up. I picked out a toy pistol from my games sets and loaded it with small metallic pellets.

I flew down the flight of stairs. The gun was always in my hand. The other burglar had sensed something amiss and was en route to making his escape. I came to the first floor and took a look. The perpetrator was already at the door, a gunnysack of valuables in his right hand.

I did not bother to chase. I just brought up the toy pistol. And pulled the trigger.

I had not been aiming for his head, like what I would do in the computer game. The toy pistol was not as deadly as that to kill. His hand was my target. I focused. Everything around me had become a blur. All I had in vision was the gun and his hand. I pulled the trigger again.

The man yelled and grabbed hold of his hand, nursing it. This was then the police and Mr Lim arrived. The perpetrator med a last ditch effort to escape. Empty-handed, he fled into the night, swallowed by the darkness in just a matter of seconds.

Cameron Highlands was um. familiar? haha. of course la i like went there 6 month agoo. Basically, nice trip la. LOL. Spend more time on the PSP than looking at the scenery i suppose :P But who cares la. hahaha. I bet even the local tour guide didnt really care xD.

Winter Retreat usually marks the last event of the sec 3 batch, but I suppose this year there's still ProEd nite (which is um tml?). Winter Retreat marks the handing over of the 8th ProEd Council to the 9th, and the sec 3 batch seriously believes that the 9th have a batch of capable councillors. Yupp. Thanks for the wonderful time I had throughout this year and and thanks for the nice card :D

Lazy to write too much now, damn tired. Mayb post more about this tml. :D HAHA BYEBYE xD
